Three Neck Stretches for Cervicogenic Dizziness and Headaches

Did you know that nearly 15% of adults in the United States will be affected by dizziness or vertigo each year? Similarly, complaints about headaches are one of the most common forms of pain and one of the leading causes for someone to call out of work. The amount of time we spend in front of screens certainly doesn’t help with headaches.

While our Physical therapy team specializes in treating headaches, dizziness, and vertigo, we’re not going to dole out medical advice because each case is so unique. Today, we’re sharing three easy stretches for dizziness and headaches.

These stretches target the upper trapezius, levator scapula, and the sternocleidomastoid. All of which can contribute to headaches and neck tightness.

We start with the upper trapezoid stretch (sometimes known as the side bend stretch); followed by the levator - which inserts up to the base of the skull and the shoulder blade. Finally, if you turn to look up to the sky or ceiling, you’ll feel that in the front of the neck.

Hold each for three breaths while inhaling and exhaling slowly.

We offer stretch therapy programs to help prevent injuries and keep you pain and injury-free. Our stretching programs are perfect to help increase the range of motion and quality of movement. We include a whole-body assessment to identify muscle restriction, flexibility imbalances, and postural asymmetries. From there, we create an individualized stretch program to address your specific issues. Want to learn more? Contact us to schedule a consultation.
