SHEnanigans: Amy It All Comes Out On The Table

In this episode of the Shenanigans Podcast, host Jenny Young welcomes her "brainstorm buddy" and close friend Amy McMillin, owner of Custom Care Rehab. The episode begins with a lighthearted "candy review" icebreaker featuring old-school Razzles, which quickly transitions into a deep dive into their unique professional relationship. The two entrepreneurs share how they met through a "cold call" that turned into a collaborative partnership, blending Amy’s expertise in physical therapy and business execution with Jenny’s visionary branding and videography skills.

The conversation shifts toward the realities of balancing ambitious business goals—like writing books, launching podcasts, and managing employees—with the demands of motherhood and household management. They discuss the importance of "blocking" time, asking for help from their community, and setting boundaries to prevent burnout. Both women reflect on how they are redefining "mom life" for their children by modeling a strong work ethic while also prioritizing intentional "micro-moments" and extended time off to recharge.

Why "Prehab" and Personalized Physical Therapy are Changing the Game

In the traditional medical model, healing is often seen as a linear process: you get injured, you have surgery, and then—and only then—do you begin rehabilitation.

However, according to Dr. Robbie Whittaker of Custom Care Rehab, that model is missing a vital proactive step. In a recent episode of the Ascend Health Show with host Nick Angelis, Dr. Whittaker discussed how "prehab," mobile therapy, and pain neuroscience are helping patients in Northeast Ohio recover faster and more effectively.

The "Squirrel vs. the Intruder": Understanding Chronic Pain

One of the most profound shifts in modern PT is the move toward Pain Neuroscience. Dr. Whittaker explains that for many chronic pain sufferers, the body’s "alarm system" is stuck in a state of high alert.

"Think of your brain like a Ring doorbell camera," says Dr. Whittaker. "You want it to alert you to an intruder (a new injury). But sometimes, the camera starts alerting you to every squirrel or neighbor that walks by. In chronic pain, your brain registers normal movement as a threat."

Physical therapy helps "reset" this alarm. Through education, patients learn that pain does not always equal injury. By distinguishing between "stretchy/uncomfortable" (safe) and "sharp/stabbing" (stop), patients can push through the fear-avoidance that often leads to muscle atrophy.

Blending Compassion and Leadership in Business

In this podcast, I sit with Kimberly Tara for a heartfelt conversation about blending compassion and leadership in business. We dug into the story behind Custom Care Rehab—how stepping away from the traditional 9-5 model gave me the freedom to prioritize what matters most: individualized, high-quality patient care. Launching Ohio’s first mobile physical therapy fleet wasn’t just a career pivot; it was a leap toward creating a more patient-centered, flexible, and values-driven approach to rehab and wellness.

During the episode, we explore the real-life challenges of entrepreneurship, from building a team that shares your mission to balancing motherhood with leadership. I also share some of the key lessons I’ve learned about setting boundaries, staying grounded, and leading with empathy—both in the clinic and at home. Whether you’re a provider thinking about making a leap or just need a reminder that it’s possible to grow a business without losing your heart, this episode is for you.
