YOU HAVE VERTIGO, NOW WHAT?
You awoke in the middle of the night, room spinning, scared you call the doctor. After making sure you have no signs of a stroke, you have been diagnosed with vertigo. But what does that mean? There are over 80 causes of dizziness!
Vertigo simply means you experience a sensation of spinning or you see the room spinning; it is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Many times patients are given medication and told there is not much more to do but wait. However, if left untreated vertigo can increase the risk of fall, unscheduled time off work, and dizziness that interferes with your day.
Fortunately, physical therapists who are specially trained in vestibular rehab are highly skilled in ferreting out the true cause of the symptom of vertigo. Through a detailed history of symptoms, onset, duration, and provoking circumstances, a vestibular therapist can help identify then treat vertigo. Identifying the true cause of dizziness is the “secret to success” and allows for treatment versus just masking the symptoms with medication.
Depending on the cause of vertigo, vestibular therapy includes a variety of treatment options. Some treatment options include gaze stability exericises or canalith repositioning maneuvers. At Custom Care Rehab, each patient will receive an individualized program that is targeted towards the speediest recovery possible. We know your time, safety, and health is valuable and will restore your function as quickly as possible.
