BENEFITS OF DIRECT ACCESS IN PHYSICAL THERAPY

In the state of Ohio, with some provisions, a patient can simply schedule an appointment with a physical therapist (PT) of their choice without a physician referral. Therapists are highly trained medical professionals who are appropriate entry points into the medical system after an injury. PTs are able to recognize red flags and refer out to physicians if needed. Alternatively, they can identify the source of injury and begin treatment right away.

Advantages of physical therapy Direct Access:

  1. More Care Options: Direct Access gives you more professionals to choose from to help you with an injury or chronic condition. You can now begin your treatment with your primary care physician, specialist physician, or physical therapist.

  2. Early Access to Care: The philosophy of Custom Care Rehab is a concierge-based model; one that is convenient and expedient. You no longer have to wait for a physician referral to start treatment. Even if you require a physician follow-up, physical therapy can usually help reduce your pain and begin your healing process at your first visit.

  3. Reduced cost of Care: Studies demonstrate reduced costs for people who begin their care with physical therapists. If you have a high deductible insurance plan, or a plan with co-insurance, costs can add up fast. Our physical therapists can help you without extra expensive tests, while also educating you about many at-home treatments and exercise programs to reduce your expenses.

  4. PT uses alternative pain management methods: The CDC recommends alternative pain management methods via physical and occupational therapy to reduce the need for opioid use. With direct access PT, a patient can receive benefits quickly, and is, therefore, less likely to utilize pain medications. Provisions for treatment using Direct Access in Ohio:

    • The PT must obtain a master’s degree or have two years of clinical experience

    • If the patient does not demonstrate progress within 30 days, the PT must refer him or her to an appropriate healthcare provider

    • The PT must notify the patient’s healthcare provider within the first five days following the initial PT evaluation
