EXERCISE OF THE WEEK: BIRD DOG

I love the Bird Dog exercise! It is meant to target the small muscles that surround your spine and provide stability, but when you’re really in tune with your core you can use this exercise to serve as the foundation for better balance. Start on all 4’s, hands under shoulders, keep head down, move opposite limbs outward towards the walls as far as you can reach.

To get the most out of this exercise:

  1. Think of your hips like headlights, and always keep them pointed to the floor

  2. Lengthen opposite arm and leg, as if someone is pulling your extremities away from one another

  3. Exhale all the air you can as you pull your arm and leg back toward your navel, and inhale as you lengthen

  4. Do not allow a large arch in the back, pull stomach in

  5. Perform 3 x 10 reps
